Who are the Real Cowards?

After listening to Brian Preston as he was interviewed on the Craig Anderson Show , I now understand who bankrolled the Back to Basics PAC full-page ads that appeared recently in major newspapers around the state of Texas.

These ads blasted Gov. Perry, calling him a coward even though it was Bill White, Congressman Chet Edwards, and other Democrats who “headed for the hills” rather than be photographed with Obama and Pelosi when they recently came to Texas.

Who are the true cowards?  (Interestingly enough, the two appearances that Pelosi made in Texas were in the Dallas and Houston homes of trial lawyers.)

According to Brian Preston, even though Back to Basics PAC lists itself as a PAC, one man actually bankrolled the ad effort — a Houston trial lawyer named Steve Mostyn. He made his fortune from the mold lawsuits filed back in the early 2000’s that drove up all of our home insurance rates.

Mostyn next capitalized on Texas’ hurricanes by filing more lawsuits that have left Texas vulnerable until more laws can be passed.

Mostyn has given $100,000 to Bill White’s campaign and another $1.8 Million this cycle to a dozen Texas Democrat legislators and to the Trial Lawyers Association.  He has pledged to give another $1.2 Million more.

Why would Mostyn spend over $3 Million on these ads, on Bill White, and on various Democrat legislators and organizations?  Mostyn is trying to “pay off” the people who could overturn Texas’ tort reform laws. Mostyn wants the cap removed so that he can add more millions to his bank account by filing no-cap, multi-million dollar lawsuits.

It is because of Texas’ tort reform laws, no state income tax, a cap on medical liability lawsuits, and its business friendly atmosphere that our state was ranked by 651 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) from across the United States as the best state for business. It is no coincidence that according to the U. S. Census Bureau, Texas gained over 848,000 (net) new residents in the last 10 years while California lost 1.5 million.

If we want our state to stay financially strong and avoid the bankruptcy that other states are facing, we had better get behind Gov. Rick Perry, contribute to his campaign, and tell our friends and neighbors to do the same.  And make sure everyone knows who and what Steve Mostyn is and not allow him “to buy” this election.
