TED CRUZ INVITES DAVID DEWHURST TO FIVE LINCOLN-DOUGLAS STYLE DEBATES
“Voters want to hear from the candidates,” Dewhurst says
AUSTIN—Ahead of this weekend’s Lincoln-Douglas style debate between Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich in The Woodlands, Ted Cruz invited Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst to five similar debates between now and the primary election.
Cruz noted in a letter to Dewhurst, that the Lt. Governor publicly stated, “What I think is in the voters’ best interest is to hear from the candidates, and so that’s what we’re doing.”
“I take you at your word that you are sincerely interested in providing Texans a fair opportunity to ask the hard questions necessary to make an informed decision in this Senate election,” Cruz wrote.
This Saturday’s Lincoln-Douglas debate between Cain and Gingrich is getting a tremendously high level of interest from Republican primary voters. “Texans deserve the same opportunity in the Texas Senate race,” Cruz observed.
“I know it’s tempting for a front-runner to try to hide from debates, and you have often said you consider yourself the front-runner,” Cruz added in the letter to Dewhurst. “But you’re a smart, serious man, and I hope you respect Texas voters enough to stand before them and answer their questions.”

Dear Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst,
You have publicly stated, “What I think is in the voters’ best interest is to hear from the candidates, and so that’s what we’re doing. We’re going to almost a different city every day.”
I take you at your word that you are sincerely interested in providing Texans a fair opportunity to ask the hard questions necessary to make an informed decision in this Senate election.
In that spirit, I invite you to join me in five Lincoln-Douglas style debates across the State between now and the Republican Primary.
As you know, this Saturday in The Woodlands, Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich are participating in a Lincoln-Douglas debate hosted by the Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC.
Texans deserve the same opportunity in the Texas Senate race.
Voters are rightly tired of short sound bites and 30-second TV ads. A Lincoln-Douglas style debate would allow us to address the issues in a serious, substantive way—to give the voters the insight they need to make an informed decision.
I know it’s tempting for a front-runner to try to hide from debates, and you have often said you consider yourself the front-runner. But you’re a smart, serious man, and I hope you respect Texas voters enough to stand before them and answer their questions.
You have also publicly suggested that I’m a “rookie,” not having your long experience as an elected official. Standing next to me during a substantive debate will provide an excellent opportunity for you to make the case how valuable your lengthy experience as an elected official would be in the United States Senate.
Accordingly, I hope you will agree to join me for five Lincoln-Douglas debates between now and the Primary Election on March 6th.
All the best,
Ted Cruz
