Ralph Sheffield says Straus “punished a lot of people”

by Weston Hicks | November 30, 2011 | Blog, Agenda Wise

Speaker Straus wants to be perceived as a leader who forgets his agenda in favor of supreme fairness. He needs this image since he is from an industry, gambling, that requires legislation to expand.

In the end, he’d like to see VLTs (the non-”slot machine” word for slot machines) legalized at racetracks without anyone noticing that racetrack industry was Speaker of the House when it happened.

So, we get a speaker who projects sweetness and fairness, sanitized to the point of sterility. He needs us to perceive him as so committed to moderating fairly that he has no time or inclination to push a personal agenda.

Straus loyalist Ralph Sheffield didn’t help his Speaker’s cause at a meeting with a tea party in his district during the summer.

Your Help is Needed to Defeat Texas RINOs‏

by Peter Morrison | November 30, 2011 | The Peter Morrison Report

Summary of this week’s report:

RINOs are the curse of the GOP, but, as hard as it is to believe after two years of Tea Party activism, many key RINOs are still in office and Joe Straus is still the Texas Speaker. Despite the current redistricting turmoil, we need to organize to give the boot to as many RINOs in Austin and DC as possible.

Full report:

In 2012, Texas conservatives need to focus our energies on removing our own RINOs from office, and keeping them off the Republican ticket, this coming election.

It’s impossible to overstate how important this task is, on both the state and the national levels. RINOs are poison to a conservative agenda. There is little real difference between them and Democrats, and once elected they use their power to sabotage attempts to enact good conservative legislation. We’ve seen this take place in Austin over and over. No matter how loudly conservatives speak at the polls, and how good prospects for conservative legislation look, the RINOs in the party often manage to water good bills down, or block them altogether.

On top of this, activist federal judges have thrown the election into complete turmoil by throwing out the new legislative district maps recently drawn up in Austin, creating their own maps, and ordering the state to follow them. This was in response to a lawsuit claiming that the maps drawn up in Austin discriminated against non-white voters, particularly Hispanics. The court found in their favor and drew up new maps that were much more to their liking, because they include more districts where Hispanics are a majority. (You can compare the legislature’s map and the court’s map by doing an internet search for Texas District Viewer.) Given long established voting patterns, what this boils down to is that the court has created several more solidly Democratic districts, and eliminated some solidly Republican districts.

Attorney General Greg Abbott has filed an emergency appeal with the US Supreme Court to put the enactment of this ruling on hold, partly because Monday, November 28th was the first day a person who intends to run for office could file paperwork for a place on the ballot. When it’s not even clear what districts will exist come Election Day, it’s pretty difficult to file the proper paperwork, so everything is in flux right now. Hopefully common sense and judicial restraint will prevail at the Supreme Court, and this ruling will be put on hold, but that is by no means certain. Furthermore, even if this ruling does wind up being eventually overturned on appeal, the voting trends driven by huge population growth among Hispanics in Texas virtually assure that the state legislature and Congressional delegation will become increasingly less Republican and more Democratic.

Given all these factors – the dim prospects of a truly conservative presidential candidate, the state elections being up in the air, and the massive demographic changes taking place in Texas, it’s imperative that we work harder than ever in 2012 to elect genuine conservatives to the state house and to Congress. The 2010 elections demonstrated what we can do when we’re truly motivated, and we need to recapture that same level of energy and motivation for the Republican primaries of 2012, which take place in early March.

If a RINO currently represents your district in Austin or DC, or if one is currently the favorite for the GOP nomination, start organizing now to defeat him or her in the primary. Wherever there are genuine conservative challengers, it’s time to get behind them. If there aren’t currently any, it’s time to recruit someone. If you don’t know of anyone else that might run, consider running yourself! It’s easy to think of reasons not to run or get involved, but as Edmund Burke once said, “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

Don’t underestimate the impact you may have. All incumbents either run unopposed or run scared. RINOs in particular know they have betrayed their base and are scared of being called on it. Several conservatives won in 2010 in the primary against well-funded incumbents, like former RINO state representatives Tommy Merritt and Delwin Jones. By running against someone, even if you lose, you make them spend money, money that an unopposed incumbent can use to prop up his fellow RINOs in other districts. If you lose and do better than expected, you might still accomplish your goal. Case in point: RINO Burt Solomons just announced he won’t be seeking re-election. Insiders I know report that this is because he was shown to be weak in the 2010 primary when he squeaked by with 53% of the vote against an opponent who spent a tiny amount of money, and big money conservative donors were looking to run a very strong race against him this year, so he chickened out. There’s nothing more humiliating for an incumbent than to lose in a primary (and many of them are lazy from years in office with no serious campaigns), so often fear of losing makes them quit, and you win by default. This happened in 2010 when RINO Brian McCall decided not to run after the Tea Party started organizing against him in 2009; now that district is represented by a real conservative, Rep. Van Taylor. Slowly but surely conservatives are removing the turncoats who betrayed their constituents and elected Joe Straus as Speaker.

The Republican primary election date of March 6th is not very far away at all. Right now, the candidate filing deadline is December 15th. That may change, depending on what happens in the courts. In the next few weeks we’ll have a definitive answer one way or another on the redistricting map, so if your district is currently in flux that should change soon. So keep an eye on the news, and get ready to do battle this March with GOP sellouts!

If you have any specific questions about your district, such as whether your incumbent deserves a challenger, feel free to email in. I can find out if there is an existing challenger and help connect you with some folks who can help you if you decide to run.

Fort Hood Major Hasan 30 Nov hearing statement

Fort Hood Public Affairs Office | November 30, 2011 | Press Release

In another pre-trial hearing today in the case of U.S. v Maj. Nidal Hasan, the judge, Col. Gregory Gross, listened to arguments from the defense attorneys and prosecutors regarding several motions pending before the court.

At a previous hearing on Oct. 27, Gross had answered questions from the defense attorneys pertaining to his personal impact of the shooting at Fort Hood on Nov. 5, 2009.  Today the defense attorneys asked more questions and requested Gross to recuse himself from the trial because of the appearance of bias as a judge.  Although Gross was present at Fort Hood the day of the shooting, he says he had no specific knowledge of the events as they transpired and that he has distanced himself from any news or discussion of the incident.  Gross denied the defense motion to recuse himself, and he remains as the judge in the case.

The defense attorneys then argued two separate motions regarding Articles I and III of the U.S. Constitution, alleging that Hasan’s fundamental right to life will be violated if he is prosecuted and sentenced to death in a military court-martial.  This case is being prosecuted as a capital case, meaning the death penalty is a possible sentence if Hasan is found guilty, and under the Constitution certain procedures must be followed to ensure his rights are protected.  The military court-martial process is separate and distinct from any civilian court in the U.S. and procedures are created by Congress and the President in a different manner.  The defense argued that these differences deny military defendants the same protection as civilian defendants and therefore violate the Equal Protection clause of the Constitution. Therefore, the defense has requested that this case not be tried as a capital case.

Gross did not rule on the two motions about Hasan’s Constitutional rights. He also has not yet ruled on the two motions argued at the last hearing pertaining to expert assistance for the defense team.  He has not indicated when a ruling may be made, and the next hearing is not yet scheduled.

The trial of U.S. v Hasan is scheduled to begin March 5, 2012.  Hasan is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Throwing Cain Under His Own Train

by AlfonZo Rachel | November 29, 2011 | ChristianConservativePolitics.com

Let’s hear it for the left wing media and the establishment republicans!!! No matter how much the so called conservative voters say, “We will not let the liberal media and the establishment republicans pick our candidates” they’re letting the liberal media and establishment republicans do just that.

I can see the formula as clearly as I can see the face tightening ratchet on the back of Pelosi’s neck.

The Republican Party has come to be a party that lacks the stamina to defend themselves.

This is why the democrats are able to charge republicans with the evils the democrat party has done.

It’s bloody ridiculous that even though the democrats did everything from founding the KKK, to standing in the way of women’s suffrage, to eugenics, republicans are the ones who get accused and stigmatized, and have about as much stamina as an emphezemic snowman in Las Vegas when it comes to defending themselves.

Read the whole screed.  I TOTALLY agree with Zo. Hat tip The Right Scoop.

Buh-bye Barney Frank

Yesterday was a very good day in America. We got the word that Barney Frank – malcontent, miscreant, a main creator of the housing crash of 2008 and drama queen of the House of Representatives – would not be running for another term. That’s right – Barney bailed. Then the Dow went up. Are these two things related?

Meet Joel B. Pollak, a graduate of Harvard Law School who is currently editor-in-chief and in-house counsel at Breitbart.com. In this interview with Greta Van Susteren two years ago he asks a question which turns into a confrontation with Rep. Frank – a surprisingly common phenomenon. He also explains to Greta how he went from being a liberal Democrat to a conservative Republican. Did I mention he is Jewish? Fascinating.

There’s a great video tribute to Bawney Fwank over at Yid w Lid.  Here’s mine from Sean Bielat – who ran against Frank in the last election and who may be a big part of the reason for Barney’s bailing out. (That has a nice ring to it…)

Update 11/28/2011: Barney Frank is not seeking reelection. Bye-Bye-Barney!

It takes some serious moves to avoid responsibility for the housing bubble, the financial crash, and the unemployment crisis when you’re at the very center of it all! And let’s not forget other scandals, like free trips to the Virgin Islands paid for by the Paloma Partners, folks that Barney directly regulates.

Rock it, Barney! Rock it!

Priority Project: Derailing the Cain Train

UPDATE *** PICKET: New Cain accuser’s background includes stalking, bankruptcy, and sexual harassment suits

The Ruling class elitists are dead set against any “altering or abolishing” by the Country class. That is why they are putting IEDs under the tracks of the Cain Train.
There they go accusing Herman Cain of cheating on his wife again with yet another woman. Oh, I know it’s supposed to look like she herself has decided to come forward. Right. Are you getting tired of all these bimbo’s crawling out of the woodwork yet? What a stupid – not to mention cheap – trick this is. Let me see now. One accuser was an Obama supporter. Another was so jazzed and happy to be in front of the cameras alleging sexual molestation by Mr. Cain – who, among other things, is a mathematician and minister – that her “counsel” Gloria Allwet had to tell her to cool it. Whatever happened to that one by the way? Haven’t heard a peep since we discovered she lived in David Axelrod’s building.

The Ruling class elite is scared to death of Herman Cain. That they’re trying this again means they’re desperate and have run out of tricks. But lawfare like this is the same thing they did to Governor Palin. They see the Country class as a greater threat to their power, a greater enemy than radical Islamic terrorists. Can somebody please give the Washington elites some Country class sensitivity training courses?

The real kicker is that cheating on his wife (allegedly, mind you) is supposed to make the electorate reject Cain as unelectable. No, no they tell us, go for Newt the Genius. The guy who actually cheated, the serial wife cheater you could say. He’s the electable one. Right.

Give me a break.

From the Esquire Magazine interview in which Marianne Gingrich, Newt’s second wife, tells of finding out there was someone else.

Early in May, she went out to Ohio for her mother’s birthday. A day and a half went by and Newt didn’t return her calls, which was strange. They always talked every day, often ten times a day, so she was frantic by the time he called to say he needed to talk to her.

“About what?”

He wanted to talk in person, he said.

“I said, ‘No, we need to talk now.’ ”

He went quiet.

“There’s somebody else, isn’t there?”

She kind of guessed it, of course. Women usually do. But did she know the woman was in her apartment, eating off her plates, sleeping in her bed?

She called a minister they both trusted. He came over to the house the next day and worked with them the whole weekend, but Gingrich just kept saying she was a Jaguar and all he wanted was a Chevrolet. ” ‘I can’t handle a Jaguar right now.’ He said that many times. ‘All I want is a Chevrolet.’ ”

He asked her to just tolerate the affair, an offer she refused.

NOT photoshopped.

Before you go and vote for Newt you owe it to the rest of us to read the entire piece. And this would be your next first lady, the platinum helmet-haired ex-staffer in red whose name begins with a C.

I don’t know about you but I will not be herded into the Country class corral quite so quickly. Yet I am sorry to see so many of my compatriots shunning the Cain Train by not even mentioning him as top tier anymore. Yes, I said shunning. It’s an old technique of letting a miscreant know you disapprove of his immoral conduct, his breaking the rules we all have agreed to live by. I think they’re focusing on the wrong guy. Newt slept with Callista in his wife Marianne’s bed, ate off her plates while Marianne was away for less than two days visiting her mother. Yet Newt and Callista write books like Rediscovering God in America and the gullible public is psyched at the prospect of the emperor with no pants flummoxing Obama in televised election debates. Has it really come to this?

The Ruling class is afraid of Herman Cain – the real American black man with the success story that can render the all powerful Democrat race card null and void. What kind of altering and abolishing will he do? What kind of justices will he nominate to the Supreme Court to load it to tilt conservative every time? Will he dismantle the bureaucracy the Democrats have so devotedly constructed? Can he turn this great failing business of the United States around like he did two major national corporations? Will this self-reliant, freedom loving patriot take the steps needed to make the nation strong in a dangerous world?

But no. Here at the precipice above the abyss of fiscal and societal ruin, with the Ruling class boot on our necks, we are supposed to elect another Washington insider – a man with “experience” – to save us. Is Newt Gingrich, the Speaker who doesn’t speak for me, Ruling class or Country class? Whatever he is, I’d say he is a little too smart for our own good.

I rest my case.

Is This Man Obama’s Worst Nightmare?

Understanding Today’s Pakistan Tumult

My guru, who never made a mistake, predicted in 1977 that World War III will begin in Pakistan. Many jihad fighters have trained there and the late Osama Bin Laden took refuge there for many years among sympathetic tribesmen. It is important to understand what is going on. Some background in this excerpt from Angelo M. Codevilla’s piece The Lost Decade:

AFPAK

The War on Terror is turning Pakistan’s people, long friendly to America, into enemies. Pakistan is necessarily very interested in Afghan affairs because some of the same ethnic groups, especially the Pashtun, live on both sides of the artificial border. In the 1990s, Pakistan sponsored the formation of Afghanistan’s Taliban to safeguard Pashtun and Pakistani interests after the Soviet Union’s departure. When, after 9/11, the U.S. government indicted the Taliban for having harbored some of the attack’s planners, Pakistan was quick to pull its support for the Taliban and helped the U.S. overthrow them.

But after 2002, and much more rapidly after 2008, the U.S. government literally occupied Afghanistan to “nation-build” it according to the standard recipe, including equality for women. Armed resistance to the American occupation by tribal and Islamist elements grew quickly on both sides of the border. U.S. occupiers termed it “Taliban.” Regardless of the name, the Islamist opposition designated Pakistan’s government as an enemy quite as much as the U.S. Our government then began striking targets inside Pakistan, putting Pakistan’s government in the position of having to fight its own people. The U.S. helped to overthrow the country’s president, Pervez Musharraf, for insufficient alacrity in doing so. As Pakistani public opinion becomes ever more anti-American, his successors writhe in the same bind.

This leads us to consider Afghanistan. While the U.S. invasion of 2001 did America some good by showing that Americans would punish those who harbor terrorists, the subsequent occupation did America much harm by showing the extent to which our new way of war is counterproductive. In 2001 few Afghans had ever heard of the U.S. Of those who had, most knew that Americans had helped them rid themselves of the deeply hated Soviets. True, the Taliban harbored Osama bin Laden’s Afghan Arabs because they brought money and lent a little help in their fight against the Uzbeks and Tajiks. Whether any Taliban knew or cared about bin Laden’s anti-Americanism is by no means clear.

Clearly though, the Taliban were not, per se, America’s enemies. After the invasion, most Taliban switched sides and happily sold to the Americans every Arab they could find in their midst. Ten years later, after American “nation-building,” involving economic aid that dwarfs Afghanistan’s GDP, millions of Afghans areAmerica’s enemies. Through legitimate and illegitimate channels (it matters little which), American money made fortunes for countless Afghans. But that did not counterbalance the resentment of those who did not get their share of the loot; and then there was the antagonism engendered by American forces’ countless intrusions and killings, many on the basis of unsubstantiated intelligence reports. Even in the absence of such things, the mere presence of wealthy, haughty foreigners would have rubbed the Afghans the wrong way.

9-9-9 The Movie – Slaying the Tax Monster

Direct from Mr. Herman Cain to you and all in one place – the explanation of a simple plan that has been the target of so much derision. The Ruling class elitists (both sides of the aisle) are dead set against any “altering or abolishing” proposed by the Country class. That’s why they torpedo Herman Cain and his ideas. Watch this easy to understand – and entertaining – video expose and decide for yourself if this sounds viable. I have stopped listening to highly paid, obfuscating idiots. You can, too.

The Federal tax code is an overgrown monster. A dorky, mechanical monster held together with a bunch of tattered red tape and driven around by squirrely bureaucrats. The scary part is that we’ve been slaves to something this ridiculous as long as we have.

What would happen if we ‘scrapped’ all 82,000 pages of the current tax code, and started over? For far too long, we’ve been the hapless victims of a monstrously dysfunctional tax code. Find out how Herman Cain’s “9-9-9 Plan” can slay the Tax Monster!

Time for our “You-Suck-and-It’s-All-Your-Fault” moment

In order to recover from self-destructive behavior an individual has to hit bottom. Glenn Beck, who calls himself a recovering alcoholic, says he had a moment when his wife and his friends helped him. How? By telling him, “You suck. And it’s all your fault” that he was in the mess he was in. He says that’s when he finally had to face the music and turn himself around.

Quite frankly I think America has been eating too many lotuses, imagining too many impossible scenarios – such as “if we just disarm then our so-called enemies will stop fighting us” or “we can spread freedom by promoting democratically held elections in countries that were oppressed by tyrants.” Nice entertainment for a Saturday matinee* but doesn’t work in a world where the big still eat the small.

And although many of us assume we will always be the First and Best amongst nations, we have been warned many times that such a status is not automatic. It requires constant vigilance. Yes, we love and respect our military. But they have their job to do and we have ours, namely to elect leaders that adhere to the US Constitution and enumerated powers. The fact is that the politics of the self-interested has tied the hands of our armed forces and blinded the eyes of our intelligence networks. And the highly paid and biased media has run interference so we haven’t noticed – not that we were paying that much attention in the first place.

It may not be very palatable to hear but America hasn’t conclusively won a war since WWII. When I ran that by Richard in D.C. he said this:

  • I think you have to call Panama and Granada wins though these were more conflicts or interventions.
  • I think you also have to call Gulf War I a win (Desert Shield/Desert Storm) The “Shock and Awe Air Campaign was followed by Schwartzkopf’s “Hail Mary” Ground Assault and was completed in 100 hours, hence the nickname, “The 100 Hours War”.  Iraq certainly couldn’t stop anything we did.  We decided to stop because we ran out of targets and Bush I didn’t want to spread the war beyond Kuwait’s borders (per UN resolution). [I don't call it a win. H.W. left Saddam Hussein in power! All the shock and awe without removing the trouble maker was like going to the airport but not getting on the plane - pointless. Saddam Hussein continued to ignore UN censorship and cause trouble for the next decade. Not a win in my book.]
  • In Gulf War II, we blew through the Iraqi armed forces like a hot knife through butter, going farther, faster than any tank assault in history.  We actually had to slow it down.  We were running out of targets and advancing too fast for the gas trucks to keep up. We didn’t lose the war.  We lost the occupation. [Really? I thought winning a war was when you crush the enemy and destroy his sanctuary, he surrenders unconditionally and does whatever you tell him to do - namely desist in his attacks. But we are doing the opposite by leaving behind all our military equipment as well as forces who were trained by us, potentially enabling militant Islamic regimes in Iran and Syria.]
  • Korea - Tie.  This one never ended.  It’s a cease-fire that could flare up again, anytime.
  • Vietnam – Loss.
  • Bosnia – Undecided / Withdrawal.  Like Israel / Palestine, this one will never end.
  • Afghanistan – Undecided / Withdrawal.  Initial success requires constant suppression and will likely end in abandonment of the campaign and ultimate withdrawal of U.S. forces without any decisive battle or outcome.

Something is wrong. I think it is time we made a serious examination of what Rush Limbaugh means when he says, “America is a great nation at risk in a dangerous world.” I came across three things that will make our current condition understandable.

Exhibit One - This piece by Caroline Glick, columnist for the Jerusalem Post, is clear and forthright. It so concisely summarizes the affairs of the Middle East that I found myself reading one paragraph and stopping to visualize the scenario before moving on to the next one. If you want to actually understand the situation Caroline Glick makes it very easy. Things only seem complex because it benefits certain parties when we are confused. Don’t miss this.

Next month, America’s long campaign in Iraq will come to an end with the departure of the last US forces from the country.

Amazingly, the approaching withdrawal date has fomented little discussion in the US. Few have weighed in on the likely consequences of President Barack Obama’s decision to withdraw on the US’s hard-won gains in that country.

After some six thousand Americans gave their lives in the struggle for Iraq and hundreds of billions of dollars were spent on the war, it is quite amazing that its conclusion is being met with disinterested yawns.

Exhibit Three – Angelo M. Codevilla’s essay on The Clairemont Institute, mentioned in Caroline Glick’s post.

The Lost Decade

by Angelo M. Codevilla | Posted October 20, 2011 | The Claremont Institute

America’s ruling class lost the “War on Terror.” During the decade that began on September 11, 2001, the U.S. government’s combat operations have resulted in some 6,000 Americans killed and 30,000 crippled, caused hundreds of thousands of foreign casualties, and spent—depending on various estimates of direct and indirect costs—somewhere between 2 and 3 trillion dollars. But nothing our rulers did post-9/11 eliminated the threat from terrorists or made the world significantly less dangerous. Rather, ever-bigger government imposed unprecedented restrictions on the American people and became the arbiter of prosperity for its cronies, as well as the manager of permanent austerity for the rest. Although in 2001 many referred to the United States as “the world’s only superpower,” ten years later the near-universal perception of America is that of a nation declining, perhaps irreversibly. This decade convinced a majority of Americans that the future would be worse than the past and that there is nothing to be done about it. This is the “new normal.” How did this happen?

Rock You Like Herman Cain

Please give me permission to be totally honest for a minute. The hard cold reality of American politics: Black trumps white. Black trumps female (Obama over Hillary). Black trumps gay. So why won’t the Republicans counter the Dems’ 2008 winning strategy with one of their own?  It makes no sense unless the establishment GOP is colluding to have Obama re-elected in 2012 in exchange for a seat at the table and some crumbs.

Don’t buy it. Stop listening to idiots. Look at a true ABC – American Black Conservative.

Quote from Herman Cain’s campaign today:

I am excited to share a recent Rasmussen (conducted November 21-22) which shows me retaking the lead nationally with 26 percent support.  I am leading Governor Romney and Speaker Gingrich by 3 and 12 percent respectively.

The American people want a true conservative in the White House.  They are tired of career politicians who are more concerned with getting reelected than fixing the problems that are plaguing our economy.

Herman Cain: An implausible candidate’s implausible story

Associated Press | November 26, 2011

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — He’s a mathematician, a minister, a former radio talk show host and pizza magnate. But most of all, Herman Cain is a salesman.

And how he sells.

“The sleeping giant called ‘we the people’ has awakened,” Cain thunders, pacing the stage in his trademark dark suit, brown fedora and “lucky” gold tie, delivering a rollicking, 45-minute performance that evokes an old-fashioned church revival, complete with cries of “Amen” from his audience.

Whether it’s selling his book or his presidential aspirations, this is Cain at his best, grinning and joking and wooing a crowd, soaking in the adulation as he vows to lead the cheering masses to a promised land of “less regulation, less legislation and less taxation.”

That’s simplistic, of course. But so is Cain’s message, and he makes no apologies for it.

“They want to confuse you with comp-lex-city,” booms the self-styled “Hermanator,” accentuating every syllable. “I want to lead you with sim-pli-city.”

In the end, he takes no questions, sweeping off to his next stop to the tune of “Rock You Like a Hurricane.” His smile disarms everyone whose hand he shakes along the way.

“Is he for real?” asks 75-year-old Jean Waggoner, a longtime Republican activist from Montgomery.

It is a question that has confounded political observers and pollsters alike: Just what to make of this unlikely candidate with an inspirational personal story, a magnetic personality and a campaign like nothing they have ever seen…

Texas Attorney General to File Emergency Stay With U.S. Supreme Court Challenging Redistricting Maps

November 26, 2011 | FoxNews.com

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott will file an emergency stay application with the U.S. Supreme Court to halt the implementation of a congressional redistricting map, Abbott’s office announced Saturday.

The statement from Abbott’s office said that a stay of the election process is needed because, “elections should not proceed based on legally flawed maps that are likely to be overturned on review.”

The motion comes after a federal court refused his request late Friday to block a congressional redistricting map it drew up for Texas, hours after the Republican accused the court of “undermining the democratic process.”

Abbott had asked the San Antonio-based court to stay the implementation of its interim map, which the court drafted when minority groups challenged the original plan passed by the Republican-dominated state Legislature.

The court-drawn map would ensure minorities made up the majority in three additional Texas congressional districts. If the 2012 elections were held under the court’s map, Democrats would have an advantage as they try to win back the U.S. House.
