The Health Insurance Racket

The Health Insurance Racket

Heresy

Full disclosure:  I am one of those people who do not buy what is commonly called “health insurance.” What a deceptive expression this is. And what a false canard is bandied about claiming anyone who doesn’t pay into one of these schemes is a FREE RIDER.

De-legitimizing self-reliance

Excuse me, but if I get injured or ill, I pay out of my own pocket or savings. I don’t expect anyone else to do so. And, because I am aware of the exhorbitant, inflated medical fees that are charged nowadays, I take care to stay healthy. This maintenance is much easier than coming back after falling ill.

“Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” said founder Ben Franklin. Good sleep, good food, exercise in moderation – that’s health care. It’s a personal, self-reliant responsibility. Not the domain of a third party insurance racket.

Following the Ayurvedic guidelines for health, I rise in the morning anywhere from 4:00 – 6:00 am and sleep by 8:30 or 9:00 pm. I’ve been vegetarian and practiced yoga for 41 years. I drink fresh squeezed juices daily. And I don’t take a single prescription drug. I don’t go to the doctor because there is nothing wrong with me. I get the flu once every four years or so. I have no mucus in the morning, or indigestion after eating. I rarely eat out. These are my personal choices and I am not advocating that everyone should be forced to follow them. I simply want to be left to my self-reliance and pay my own way if  and when needed.

But the Supreme Court has ruled that I should not be allowed to remain self-reliant. I must get with the program and conform or pay a tax / penalty. Welcome to Ameritopia.

What is covered and what isn’t = Social Engineering

The kind of “care” these packages cover are procedures with which I do not agree and do not want. For example, in 2005 I experienced several instances of abdominal pain. I went to a good hospital and the doctor found that I had gall bladder stones. He said I should have my gall bladder removed and wanted to schedule the procedure so that it wouldn’t  interfere with his upcoming golf outings. I thanked him and said I would get back to him. Just because removing gall bladders and throwing them into the trash is a common occurrence it wasn’t enough to make me go for it. I knew it would lead to further complications. So I went to a Chinese acupuncturist and herbal specialist, got some bitter herbs and after a month the stones were dissolved, the pain gone. I altered my eating habits and left out nuts and coconut. Other than that, everything went back to normal.

Health insurance covers operations but not Chinese herbs, acupuncture or other alternative healing. It is therefore useless for me.

They call it health care. I call it damage control. Health insurance is a racket where you bet against yourself, then go to the physician to get your money’s worth.

Now a friend who is a doctor revealed that he has been ordered by the government that he has to personally write the reports and fill out the forms for his patients. Not a nurse or assistant, he himself must do the paperwork. Why? So that he will be forced to see less patients and the government will be able to cut costs.

No, I wish I was kidding.

These are the new locusts. Productive people plant the crops, build the businesses, make profits and prosperity and then like clockwork the takers come in droves. Former Speaker of the House and certified ding-bat Nancy Pelosi expressed the determination of these parasites when she said

You go through the gate. If the gate’s closed, you go over the fence. If the fence is too high, we’ll pole vault in. If that doesn’t work, we’ll parachute in. But we’re going to get health care reform passed for the American people*.

*She means her Democrat Party cronies and sycophants. You know, “social just us.”

This tyranny with a smiley face for your own good by the statist left must be defeated and marginalized. Where there is a will there is a way. Let’s roll.

Seriously? Grassroots Conservative Favorite and Establishment Republican Same?

Sibyl West: While the Texas Tribune comrades would like to blur any distinction between Ted Cruz and David Dewhurst – rather than examine the latter’s actual record of achievements – here is an objective analysis much more worthy of your time. The contest between these two Texas senatorial candidates is symbolic of the epic struggle gripping the entire Republican party right now, the outcome of which will determine the future of our nation.

David Dewhurst: The GOP’s Bad Side Personified

By Corie Whalen, US Daily Review Senior Editor | 18 January 2012

The GOP establishment has an entitlement mentality that must be challenged by conservatives at every opportunity.

A nation that embraces a two party system often finds itself faced with a fractured electorate. It’s nearly impossible to contain such diverse views within two tents, and various factions form as a result. The rise of the GOP’s conservative base as personified by the Tea Party movement is indicative of this, and the same can be said of liberal dissatisfaction embodied in the Occupy Wall Street protests.

In Texas, a microcosm of this phenomenon on the right can be seen in the US Senate primary for Kay Bailey Hutchinson’s open seat. Sitting Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst has largely been seen as the “default” winner given that he is in possession of the personal wealth necessary to self-fund and has the highest profile in the race. However, his complete disregard for the voters has become so pervasive an issue that it threatens to throw him into a downward spiral; and rightfully so.

In fact, polling has consistently demonstrated that grassroots conservative favorite Ted Cruz continues to close in on Dewhurst. A poll released by Public Policy Polling on January 17th shows that since the last time PPP polled the race in September, Cruz has gained 6 points while Dewhurst has fallen 5. Additionally, the President of PPP, Tom Jensen, makes a compelling point. Jensen said of the results:

“Here’s a finding that signals the potential of this race to get very interesting: Among those 29% familiar with Cruz, whether they like him or not, he leads Dewhurst 34-31.  That speaks well to his ability to make things competitive once he becomes better known and really starts spending money.”

Relating directly to the aforementioned numbers, familiarity with Dewhurst makes it easy to discern that the more he interacts with the right-wing base, the higher his negatives grow. This largely explains, but certainly doesn’t excuse, the fact that Dewhurst responds almost exclusively by ignoring us – and the most high profile example of this behavior to date happened at the Texas Saddle Up straw poll event in Houston very recently. (An event, by the way, where Ted Cruz won the US Senate straw poll with 48% of the total vote).

According to Felicia Cravens, President of the Houston Tea Party Society and a co-organizer of the Saddle Up event at Minute Maid Park the weekend of January 14th-15th, Dewhurst simply didn’t show up despite a commitment made by his campaign. Per a conversation with a Saddle Up organizer, Dewhurst had been a confirmed speaker since December. He was on the agenda without any of his campaign representatives claiming otherwise. However, on the day of the event, Dewhurst was a no-show, without any notice to the organizers his representative had previously spoken with. As for her personal reaction, Felicia told me:

“All I wanted to see was each candidate making their case to me and the other attendees, unfiltered by gotcha questions and moderator spin. I’ve heard Dewhurst speak and wanted to hear more. Dewhurst missed an opportunity to make his case directly to a large coalition of tea party partners and Republican voters. Ultimately, I’m terribly angry that we gave him an unfiltered, straight-up opportunity to make his case, and it appears he didn’t think we were worth his time. That makes me believe he doesn’t think he needs to address crowds he doesn’t stack in his favor.”

While skipping out on a high profile conservative event put on by activists in his hometown that drew over 1,000 participants from across the state may seem like strange behavior from someone allegedly on the campaign trail, it’s actually par for the course with Dewhurst. In fact, not only is it typical conduct, it embodies everything detestable about establishment GOP politicians who see primaries as a formality and expect to be shuffled into the cozy position of their choice simply because of who they are. Dewhurst behaves as if he’s above speaking to voters because he’s the Lieutenant Governor and happens to be wealthy enough to fund his own campaign. He figures that with his built in name ID, the less voters see of him, the better he’ll do. And you know what? He’s right. But that doesn’t make it permissible.

Since this campaign got started, Dewhurst has been skipping all sorts of appearances. He finally decided to grace the voters of Texas with his presence amidst the other candidates in a debate I had the privilege of attending, which was hosted by Empower Texans during the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s annual Policy Orientation on January 12th. But keep in mind, of course, that this was only after dodging 19 prior forums of a similar nature. Luckily for Texans (and Ted Cruz), this debate was televised – and the uninspiring, not-so-quick-on-his-feet Dewhurst was put on display for the world to see. There was many a bad moment for Mr. Dewhurst during the debate. Whether it was the awkward 5 second pause while wracking his brain for god-knows-what, or the time Cruz called him out for his past support of a state income tax by quoting Dewhurst’s words directly from a Wall Street Journal piece, the event was certainly not flattering for the Lieutenant Governor.  Perhaps that’s why Dewhurst so rudely shrugged off his commitment to the 1,000+ Saddle Up Texas attendees a mere three days later.

Ultimately, what’s so frustrating about Dewhurst, and particularly his presence in a deep red state like Texas, is that the tea party was formed largely in response to politicians exactly like him – the type of entitled, often mind numbingly boring individuals who see voters as a nuisance – a mere hurdle to overcome in their quest for personal gain.

Finally. One person who has actually read the ObamaTax bill

Sibyl West: One of the army of Davids, a member of the RightOnline Official Bloggers team, sends this in.

by Sheila Barber | June 30, 2012 | freshbrewedconservatism.blogspot.com

While this was written before the decision, I think it is good to share.

In 2010, my hubby who joined me at (Rightonline), spent many hours protesting on Obamacare and trying to educate the citizenry. We were in DC the weekend the 111th Congress passed it. Nancy Pelosi got so mad at our marching and chanting that she made the Capitol police move us. I can still feel the silence of the 6 hour drive home after the passage.

The posting I am linking to has a portion of a full page ad that is a letter from Dean to Bobby “who are you” Etheridge. You will see specific pages and specific actions granted here.

The American people are in store for a massive intrusion. I have read every single word of that bill.

The danger is HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has been given unlimited authority.

Hope should not be relinquinshed. Obamacare was what the 2010 elections were about. NC changed parties after 118 years of Democratic control. I can only see Obamacare as a driving force now as well as other things affecting us.

I have hope.

Did Chief Sophist Roberts change his vote?

There is a lot of speculation about this point, but this video shows the reasoning behind it. For more prescient perspective check out this flashback from Ben Shapiro’s 2005 post concerning the Roberts appointment by President Bush.

Cruz Call on Judgment Day

The team got some bloggers together on a conference call with Ted Cruz Thursday afternoon to discuss the Supreme Court’s stunning ruling on the (Un)Affordable Care Act, aka the ObamaCare tax.

Ted began, “It’s a bad day for liberty. The Supreme Court abdicated its responsibility to uphold the Constitution. Now the battle moves to the people.”

The penalty that was never a tax wound up, with a little rewrite tweaking and twisting, being called a tax after all. He went on. “This shameful decision from the SCOTUS underscores the stakes in this senate race. The battle ground for the upcoming fight will be the US Senate.” He said that Chief Justice Roberts conciliated and “cut the baby in half” in this case. “Now is not the time for conciliation. And in 2013 the pressure is going to be enormous. [My opponent] Dewhurst would run not walk to the middle of those indicating compromise.”

There was hardly any silver lining. “I am gratified that the individual mandate fell outside the commerce clause, which is the most unconstitutional part of the opinion.” He said it was “deeply disappointing that the court made this poor excuse for a decision”, but he noted, “They’ve poured gasoline on the fire that is already raging across Texas and the country.  The reaction we noticed was that people heard the ruling, then in the next five minutes we started getting contributions online at a rate of about one every 10 seconds. This ruling will strengthen the Tea Party.”

We found out later that the Romney campaign really took off during the same period. See Romney raises $4.2M after health ruling.

The topic of Romney’s Repeal and Replace came up. Ted Cruz was asked, “What would you do?”

“These are “weenie words,” he said. “We need to repeal every word of Obamacare. It will be an epic battle.” Some of the opportunities he sees that need to be pursued are:

  • expanding competition in the marketplace
  • empowering consumers
  • increasing patient choice
  • interstate or over the state line policies, true competition
  • health insurance should not be tied to employment
  • make it personal and affordable.

Another blogger asked, “What do you see as the road we must go down if we don’t repeal it.”

“The power to tax is power to destroy,” Cruz asserted. “One thing that this case has demonstrated to the world is that Obama was lying.”

He sees the US Senate is the battleground for the states in this decision. He said that Obamacare underscores the difference between himself and his establishment Republican opponent Lt. Governor Dewhurst. Cruz signed the repeal pledge. “Dewhurst won’t sign – but he says he made a commercial about the subject.” (!)

“Now is not the time for conciliation. If it were Dewhurst might be acceptable.” He was respectful to his opponent, but it seems to me that with the fight looming ahead Ted Cruz is the right instrument. You don’t reach for a Q-tip when the job requires a hammer.

No one is paying me to say any of this by the way.

Here is a brief run down of the Lt. Governor’s performance last session fyi.

Attack! Tim Phillips and AFP Launch Mega Ad Campaign Opposing the Monstrous ObamaTax

This morning as I glanced over the headlines at Breitbart.com’s Big Government I saw in the margin an unidentified ad. There were three big money bags on one side, the middle one had Koch brothers on it, versus a multitude of little bags on the other. Then on Twitter:

“@politico: Sheldon Adelson pledges $10M to the Koch brothers’ 2012 efforts,
http://t.co/QkCLtwOL”

Could it be the left is attempting to rally against none other than AFP? Nobody takes it to them like Tim Phillips and the gang.

And today (Friday) is the launch of their new $9 million ad campaign, according to AFP President Tim Phillips who conducted a conference call with conservative bloggeers and was on the line to answer our questions. All call participants were given a private, password protected first look at the new ad, as well as details and an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

Here is the ad, just released minutes ago.

Published on Jun 29, 2012 by

President Obama promised that his healthcare law was not a tax increase, but now we know it is actually one of largest tax increases in history. Tell Obama: repeal the healthcare bill and pass patient-centered reform.

This afternoon the ad will begin airing in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Virginia. (Whew!) Minnesota and Pennsylvania are becoming more important recently as they are more in play for the upcoming elections.

The message focuses on the fact that the president said repeatedly that the Affordable Care Act was not a tax increase. But the CBO predicted it would raise spending $2 t-t-trillion (that word should be banned). In addition to cable and social media efforts, AFP has already begun holding rallies and events – five different ones last night including Waukesha, WI. Mr. Phillips said there would be 25 more today.

The president doesn’t want to talk about this issue. He said in his speech yesterday that it’s “Time to move on.” “We’re not going to,” said Phillips. “The American people overwhelmingly want this repealed.” He went on to say that this ad uses the president’s own words and the tone is not dark and dreadful like some ads. But AFP and the grassroots will be pinning the word TAX on this illegitimate legislation and keep hammering and repeating the message. Twitter made it official yesterday that the hashtag is no longer #Obamacare but now #Obamatax.

“We had tested a number of possible scenarios for the ads. We didn’t fully anticipate this ruling,” said Phillips. But the issue that has been raised by the SCOTUS ruling affects the economy, individual freedom and health care. It is therefore of major importance.

Watch for more from AFP. They’re just getting started.

Hey Tim - this one’s for you.

Democrats Committed Fraud By Not Representing Obamacare as a Tax

Megyn Kelly nails this one. Watch. Hat tip Gateway Pundit.

Published on Jun 29, 2012 by

Attorney Michael Carvin, one of the lawyers arguing against ObamaCare in Front of Supreme Court, told Megyn Kelly that a fraud had been perpetrated on the American people. If Obamacare would have honestly been represented as the largest tax in history it never would have passed through Congress. Democrats kept this a secret from the American people. Chief Justice Roberts yesterday, in some bizarre twist of logic, decided that it was indeed a massive tax.
Americans, you’ve been had.

Megyn Kelly was on last night to discuss this with Laura Ingraham on The O’Reilly Factor.

Obamacare, Justice Roberts and November

by David Robison | June 28, 2012 | Opinion Editorial

Within 30 minutes of the SCOTUS debacle, all my social media outlets where filled with doom and gloom predictions, along with a fair share of attacks on Chief Justice Roberts for his defection.

My problem with Obamacare going to the Supreme Court is that, for better or worse, when a conservative position succeeds in the court it loses it’s steam or importance to most conservative or moderate voting citizens. Remember the Bush v. Gore decision? Most Americans, as well as the Bush administration, gave a collective sigh of relief that the crazy debate was over. But not the hard core liberals and their Main Stream Media friends. Their narrative never changed that Bush stole the election and the left used that as a rally point for years. Still do in fact.

The left saw the SCOTUS  hearing the case as win-win. Court rules in favor, Obama will see it as being given future carte-blanche, if they lose, they have a campaign issue and a boogeyman to focus on. How often have you heard the phrase ” the right wing dominated Supreme Court”? If the decision is 5-4 in favor of the Conservative position then it’s decried as a partisan decision. I challenge you to find one MSM reference to the 5-4 decision from today being referred to  as being “partisan”.

Obama has been prepared for his signature legislation to be  overturned so he could use it to rally the left and bring some fire to his campaign. So maybe Chief Justice Roberts inadvertently gave Conservatives and Republicans a gift. In one stroke he removed it from being a oppressive ruling against the will of the people (which Obama and the left would surely have painted it) and turned it back to a political issue where over 60% of the public is strongly opposed to the plan.  Roberts declared the only way this rule was viable was as a tax. Obama clearly declared over and over it was not a tax. Remember him scolding George Stephanopoulus for pressing him  on the appearance that the plan and mandate were in fact a tax.

So now, not only is it back to being a campaign issue for the right, but Obama is going to have to address whether he was lying and knew it was a tax. If  he maintains that it is not a tax,  he has to explain then why SCOTUS was wrong. I don’t see him taking that approach, not from a man that can’t stand to ever admit he might be wrong.  If Mr. Obama holds true to form he’ll just try and ignore the issue and wave the inconsistency off as irrelevant.

The difference this time is that too many Americans see through the deceptive practices of this president and know that he doesn’t have a problem with warping the truth. Whether Obama and his confederates knew from the beginning that this was a tax doesn’t matter. All they cared about was getting it passed, making sure that all of the provisions that would become new taxes later on where buried deep in the 2,700 pages and then refusing to talk about them. Sure they knew it was a new opportunity to tax with impunity. Why else make sure it is the IRS handling rule enforcement?

Lets take the public’s likely reaction a step further. Since his inauguration, Obama has had no problem exceeding the authority granted to his office – from taking over GM and Chrysler, Fast and Furious, the Healthcare Plan, up to last week’s executive decision to not enforce Federal Immigration laws.  While there is some gnashing of teeth and outrage among conservative activists, very little real outrage manifests itself into public action. Obamacare now becomes a  massive  opening for creating new taxes almost at will., or as the HealthCare Act states  “at the discretion of the Secretary”.

The impact of SCOTUS ruling the Act  creates 3 key campaign problems for Obama.

  • First, he will have to face the no tax impact on Americans earning under $250,000.
  • Second, convince the voters he wasn’t lying about the mandate being a tax, otherwise it’s a violation of the Commerce clause.
  • Third, the further legal issues created by granting waivers to cronies, which will be a violation of the equal protection clause of the Constitution. If he goes back on the waivers, he will have revolts from those he sought to exempt.

No good choices for the President there.

Now Mr. Obama has some explaining to do and I don’t think he will be able to convince the masses.  It’s the pocket book issues and abuse of the Constitution that gave rise to the Tea Party and this decision will bring that same coalition of mainstream America together in overwhelming numbers.

I doubt that was an intentional plan of Chief Justice Roberts, but kicking it back to the political arena may have been the best thing that could have happened for making November the end of the Obama error.

Dewhurst “has been asked and has not, as of yet, signed the [ObamaCare Repeal] Pledge.”

via Victoria Coley | June 28, 2012 | Independent Women’s Voice

(Washington, D.C.) — Following this morning’s Supreme Court of the United States’ ruling upholding ObamaCare as Constitutional, Independent Women’s Voice President and CEO Heather R. Higgins — creators of the ObamaCare Repeal Pledge (TheRepealPledge.com) — released the following statement:

“To Texas supporters of the repeal of the President’s health care law, this morning’s decision by the Supreme Court to uphold ObamaCare was disappointing.  But its chief effect will be to refocus the upcoming primary and subsequent November election around this consistently unpopular government take-over of private health care decisions.

“In the United States Senate we must build a coalition to pass and send to the President’s desk a bill that repeals ObamaCare.  The process of crafting that coalition begins with candidates for the U.S. Senate who are signers of the Repeal Pledge — candidates that we and the voters know are committed to repeal because, by virtue of signing the Pledge, they are willing to be held accountable.

“In Texas, former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz is one of those candidates firmly committed to repeal.

“We know this because Ted Cruz has put pen to paper, and signed The ObamaCare Repeal Pledge months ago.  Cruz faces a run-off primary election on July 31st against David Dewhurst, who has been asked and has not, as of yet, signed the Pledge.

We urge all Texans who care about this issue to thank Ted Cruz, and to remind Lt. Gov. Dewhurst that signing the Pledge shows that a candidate is serious about this issue, and won’t just talk the talk, but walk the walk.

“All incumbents and candidates seeking office this November have been asked — repeatedly — to sign the Pledge.  It is our hope that even if they have not signed the Pledge to date, that with the stark reality made clear by today’s Supreme Court decision that it is clearly up to the legislative branch to rid our nation of this toxic piece of legislation, that they will do so now.”

Texas Governor Rick Perry talks to Cavuto

Freedom, Not Mandates

by Dr. Donna Campbell | June 28, 2012 | donnacampbell.com

If our Founding Fathers had wanted a Big Government, they would have started with one. Instead, they set up a system of enumerated powers that limits the federal government to those roles clearly defined in the U.S. Constitution. Those powers not defined were reserved for the people and the states.

I am extremely disappointed the Supreme Court sided with Obama and the liberal Big Government politicians in Washington. ObamaCare shifts that balance of power dramatically, and it’s not infavor of individual freedom.

America now faces a federal government way too comfortable encroaching on our liberty and we must do everything we can to protect it.

I have been a strong advocate for limited government and conservative family values, speaking at churches and tea parties across Texas. As your state senator, I will fight for our sovereignty and stand up against Washington D.C. power grabs. I will lower taxes, oppose toll roads on public highways, and protect our freedom and prosperity.

Your vote in the Republican Primary Run-Off Election on July 31, can send a powerful message. The message is that we want to strictly limit the size and scope of government and restore liberty to the people.

I’m not running for a career. I’m running for a cause. That cause is to serve you and bring the same values and critical thinking that I have used in the emergency room to fix our state government. And it won’t be with a band-aid.

Please share this video with your friends, visit my website, and join us on facebook. It’s time for true conservative leadership in Senate District 25.

Is this the government you deserve?

Pot, meet kettle. (Of course, I cannot say the rest of the joke because of Black Privilege and political correctness.)

Rick Santorum Comments on Supreme Court Ruling on ObamaCare

via Virginia Davis | June 28, 2012 | Press Release

Verona, PA – Patriot Voices Chairman and former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the constitutionality of ObamaCare:

“Today’s outcome is the worst of all scenarios. Not only are our rights being taken away and Americans are being forced to do something we don’t want to do, but now we are being burdened with the biggest permanent tax increase in our nation’s history. This is a sad day.

“I believe so strongly that if we do not defeat President Obama this November and elect more conservatives in the House and Senate, our country’s future prosperity is at risk. We saw the absolute disregard President Obama showed for the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Arizona immigration law, that I have no doubt that he sees today’s ruling in his favor as a mandate that he can now do whatever he chooses by any means possible.

“President Obama believes he is above the law, entitled to abusing his power to get what he wants, and willing to violate the constitution and the oath he was sworn to uphold. He has proven to be a very dangerous person to have this kind of power, and if he is not stopped this November, I am fearful that the make-up of this country as established by our founders will never be the same.”

The Dewhurst Record: A Litany of Stumbles, Fumbles and Interference

“Is the camera rolling? Umm… yeah, okay… give me the ball.”

Sibyl West: Here is a blow by blow recap of highlights from the kabuki dance I witnessed during the 82nd Texas Legislature. Check out this game.

via John Drogin | June 27, 2012 | Team Cruz

So, David Dewhurst just released a new TV ad saying Obama’s new amnesty policy “burns me up.” Well what burns up Texas voters more than a 105 degree summer day is a politician who will look the camera in the eye right before an election saying he’s against amnesty when just five years earlier he said:   “I support a guest worker program for those here today illegally.”

(Not to mention Dewhurst killed the bill to end in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, failed to pass legislation stopping sanctuary cities, and let E-Verify legislation die. See more below.)

David Dewhurst – Failing Texas on Border Security

1.     Amnesty. David Dewhurst claims he has “never” supported amnesty, but the truth is he promoted a guest worker program including amnesty in 2007.

“…I support a guest worker program for those here today illegally.”

(David Dewhurst, Mr. South Texas speech, Office of Lt. Governor website, 2/7/07, http://www.ltgov.state.tx.us/speeches.php?lang=en)

2.     Sanctuary Cities. David Dewhurst failed to lead on sanctuary cities, letting legislation die twice in one session.

David Dewhurst claims he fought for passage of the Sanctuary Cities bill in the Texas Senate, but it’s clear that the bill died because he refused to stand up for it. David Dewhurst stood by and did nothing as the Sanctuary Cities bill died in the Senate in the regular session.

Then, in the special session, the Senate finally passed a bill after years of trying, but did so too late for a controversial bill to get out of the House. “Absent of sanctuary cities language in SB 1, there’s no time,” said House State Affairs Committee Chairman Byron Cook, R-Corsicana. (Ward, Alexander and Eaton, “Lawmakers Shift Into High Gear,” Austin American-Statesman, 6/28/11)

When it was obvious the bill had been fatally delayed, conservatives appealed to Dewhurst to step up and attach the bill to another bill, a must-pass school finance bill. But Dewhurst did nothing, and the sanctuary cities bill died again.

Furthermore, David Dewhurst has effectively made Texas a sanctuary state by failing to pass e-Verify.

3.     E-Verify. David Dewhurst has failed to pass E-Verify.

E-Verify holds immense promise towards solving illegal immigration. In states that have passed e-Verify bills, illegal immigrants have been leaving those states in droves. Many of them have come to Texas, which has become a magnet for illegal immigration in great part because of the lack of an e-Verify program.

David Dewhurst had enormous powers in the Senate, but failed to pass on e-Verify. Legislation was introduced by Sen. Jane Nelson in the Senate (SB 84) to mandate e-Verify in communities throughout Texas. The Senate’s version of e-Verify never got out of committee. Dewhurst controls committee assignments and where bills are assigned. The bill never even got a hearing in committee. (Texas Legislature Online, Last Action: 1/31/11)

4.     Border Wall. David Dewhurst opposes building a border wall – a position to the left of one of the Democrat Senate candidates.

Even one of the Democrat Senate candidates, Grady Yarborough, supports a border wall, but David Dewhurst sides with liberal Paul Sadler on the issue:

“I am not a wall builder. I don’t think a fence works,” Sadler said.

“Solutions will not be found in building a wall. Ask Senator Zaffirini. I pride myself on tearing down walls not building walls.” (Lt. Gov. Dewhurst Applauds Sen. Zaffirini’s Hard Work For All South Texas,” Press Release, 2/17/07)

5.     In-State Tuition. David Dewhurst claims he opposes in-state tuition for illegal immigration, but he killed the bill repealing it by sending it to a liberal democrat’s committee.

Roughly ten years after it became law, Dewhurst announced he is opposed to providing in-state tuition for illegal immigrants in Texas. But when he had a chance to change the policy, he killed legislation to do it.

David Dewhurst had a chance to repeal the in-state tuition bill this past session, but Dewhurst sent the bill to liberal Democrat Judith Zaffirini (conservative rating 20% according to Texas Eagle Forum), whom he in the past has called a “friend and ally.” The bill predictably died.
